Disaster strikes-again!

The results in the Irish referendum so far clearly indicate a victory for the 'No' camp. Obviously the only reasonable reason how this could happen is a big conspiracy! Read here all about the shady connections of the money man behind the 'No' campaign.

Update: I intend to write something about the way forward after the rejection of the treaty by the Irish. But essentially I am thinking similar as Ralf Grahn.

Update II: There are several interesting comment threads, where I have essentially already expressed what I think. There is 'A Fistfull of Euros' , Jon Worth, and the Financial Times Brussels blog.

Update III: So now the 'No' camp insists that it actually is pro-Europe. That is really great. How about everybody starts to derail the treaty until they get all the special treatment they want? An extra commissioner for the Irish is simply not possible. The only thing is to go back to the system where everybody gets a commissioner.

Update IV: More comments on the referendum at Nosemonkey, Mark Mardell and Richard Corbet.

Update V:via DJ Nozem, the final results of the referendum 'No' 53.4%, 'Yes' 46.4% at 53.1% turnout. That is a pretty convincing victory for the no camp.

The first real official responses will come pretty soon, with the EU Foreign Ministers meeting on Monday, and the Heads of State or Government later in the week.

This is a fork in the road: Either the EU stays put, or it advances on the basis of the member states ready to progress.

Only the latter choice will make EU level democracy and accountability a reality in the long term.
